Understanding the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is a vital sub-system of both the circulatory system and the immune system. It functions as the body's natural "sewage system," responsible for maintaining a healthy fluid balance and supporting the core health of all tissues and organs in the body. Its primary roles include picking up waste and toxins and fighting unwanted bacteria and viruses.

Dysfunction in this system can lead to chronic swelling (edema). Some causes of this swelling include:

  • Lymphedema (LE): Damage to the lymphatic vessels and structures.
  • Medical Procedures: Biopsy or lymph node removal (often associated with cancer treatment), or surgery (e.g., liposuction).
  • Injuries: Injury to the soft tissue of the body caused by accidents or falls.
  • Chronic Conditions: Chronic venous insufficiency, diabetes, obesity, lipedema, or a sedentary lifestyle/lack of exercise.

What is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)?

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the global gold standard in the treatment of lymphedema, as well as chronic edema/swelling due to other causes. It is a comprehensive and non-invasive management technique designed to reduce swelling and manage symptoms.

The key components of a complete CDT program include:

  • Manual Lymph Therapy (MLD): A specialized massage technique to redirect fluid drainage.
  • Compression Garments & Bandaging: Utilizing bandages and/or custom garments to maintain swelling reduction and support circulation.
  • Exercise & Self-Care: Instruction in specific movements and lifestyle adjustments to stimulate lymphatic flow and empower self-management.
  • Skin Care & Hygiene: Education on proper skin care to prevent infections, which can worsen lymphedema symptoms.
